Do you know what are multimedia codecs? I think the answer is YES. You think you have installed most of codec-plugins to play audio and music in Ubuntu Linux. But you can't play a radio station supplied as ASX files under Firefox. If you want to test it, please try to play this file: http://players.creacast.com/creacast/kisskiss/playlist.asx
The following steps will help you to play ASX files in your Firefox.

  • Install mplayer if you haven't installed yet
sudo apt-get install mplayer
  • Install the mozilla-mplayer package from the Multiverse repository
sudo apt-get install mozilla-mplayer
You are done now.

    Hi plantman,

Do you get any errors? Could you tell me that is it possible to play other audio files in your mplayer?

It may not have to do with the *.asx file in question, but the site that is providing it. If you visit www.cfun.com, and click "Listen Live" in an attempt to stream, since they require Windows Media Player in order to stream their content, this solution will not work.

Works brilliantly - using it for the BBC 5live stream!
